Defendant shot the victim in the chest while the victim pumped gas

Atlanta–Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr., announces the MURDER conviction, by a Fulton County Superior Court Jury, of 30-year-old ALAN DENNIS.

At 12:00pm on June 5, 2013, 22-year-old Michael Henderson was pumping gas into his vehicle at the Shell Station along Roosevelt Highway in Union City while his brother, 33-year-old Andre Henderson paid for the fuel inside the station. At the same time at a nearby gas pump, Dennis smoked a “Black and Mild” cigar and played extremely loud rap music from the trunk of his vehicle. The defendant claimed the victim “looked at him funny,” and Dennis said he told Henderson to stop, but the victim did not.

At that point, Dennis walked over to Henderson and confronted the victim for looking in his direction. The defendant and the victim engaged in an exchange of words. Andre Henderson exited the service station and returned to the vehicle during the altercation. During the exchange of words, Dennis said to Michael Henderson,

“What are you looking at? You keep looking over here!”

Moments later, Dennis brandished a 9mm handgun from his waistband and shot Michael Henderson directly in the center of the chest. The defendant quickly returned to his vehicle and fled the scene. Henderson was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he died. Michael Henderson was a young man who had never been in any trouble. The victim worked at a Family Dollar store and actually used the money he earned to purchase the 1977 Chevy Impala in which he was pumping gas.

Several witnesses described the events to Union City Police and not one person said Michael or Andre Henderson did anything to provoke the defendant. Dennis claimed he acted in self-defense; however, a gun was never found in possession of the victim, his brother Andre, or in their vehicle. Police stopped Dennis in his vehicle moments after the shooting. The defendant stated he shot Henderson in self-defense. The murder weapon was found inside Dennis’ vehicle.

DENNIS was convicted of MURDER, FELONY MURDER, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON, POSSESSION OF A FIREARM DURING THE COMMISSION OF A FELONY, and RECKLESS CONDUCT.

Dennis was sentenced to
Life Without Parole
