Defendant raped and sodomized Atlanta woman while she slept

Atlanta–Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr., announces the RAPE conviction, by a Fulton County Superior Court Jury, of 53-year-old ANTONIO THOMAS.

On May 14, 2016, around 8:00am, the then-23-year-old victim, in this case, was sleeping in her bed in her Atlanta apartment. At that time, the victim’s boyfriend, who was also in the bed with her, woke her up and said he was going to the store. The victim fell back asleep, but a short time later, awoke to Antonio Thomas raping and sodomizing her.

The victim started yelling at Thomas and that’s when he stopped attacking her. The victim then chased the defendant out of the home and down the street from where she lived. The victim’s boyfriend saw her chasing the defendant out of the house and joined in. The defendant ran from the victim and her boyfriend and never returned. Thomas and the victim’s boyfriend had been friends since second grade, and the defendant was staying in their apartment as a guest, prior to the rape. Atlanta Police eventually arrested Thomas on August 4, 2016, almost three months after he raped the victim.

Thomas has (26) felony arrests and (9) previous felony convictions. The defendant was convicted of Statutory Rape in 1996, in DeKalb County.

In this Fulton County case, THOMAS was convicted of RAPE and AGGRAVATED SODOMY.

 Thomas was sentenced to
LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT PAROLE.

Judge Kevin Farmer, of the Superior Court of Fulton County, presided over the case. Assistant District Attorney Shamma Iqbal led the prosecution of the case. She was assisted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Johnquel Neal, Investigator Paula Galloway, and Victim-Witness-Advocate Afrika Cotton of the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office. Detectives Walters and Klein from the Atlanta Police Department were the Lead Investigators in this case.
