Defendants stepped over dying victim as they fled the scene
Atlanta—Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr. announces the FELONY MURDER conviction, by a Fulton County Superior Court Jury, of MARK SPENCER, JR. and LIL’ CHE STAFFORD for the FELONY MURDER of 51-year-old JOSE RAMAN GREER.
On December 8, 2015, 23-year-old Frederick Clark, 23-year-old Mark Spencer, and 22-year-old Lil’ Che Stafford forcibly entered the apartment of Jose Greer on Oak Street in southwest Atlanta. As they attempted to pry the front door open, Greer stood on the balcony of his third-story apartment and relayed the events to an Atlanta Police 911 operator. Greer told the dispatcher that he was going to leap from the balcony to escape the defendants who were trying to enter his home. Greer eventually followed through and jumped from the third-floor balcony to escape the intruders. As Greer was laying on the ground dying, Clark, Spencer, and Stafford entered the apartment while 22-year-old Maxx Pritchett and 18-year-old Vas Coleman waited outside in a getaway car. The men ransacked Greer’s home and stole several items including the victim’s debit card and identification. After the defendants exited the apartment and were attempting to flee the scene, Greer, still alive as he lay critically injured from his attempt to escape, asked the defendants for help. Instead of rendering aid, the defendants fled with several items belonging to Greer in tow. When the first responding Officer from the Atlanta Police Department arrived, he found Greer lying on the sidewalk. The victim told the officer that he jumped from his balcony to evade the aforementioned home invaders. Greer died the next morning from blunt-force injuries.
A day after the murder, Stafford and Coleman actively set out to sell Greer’s belongings. They first attempted to sell his debit card, laptop, and iPhone to a barber inside his shop in Southwest Atlanta. Stafford told the barber he acquired the items during a “lick” a day earlier. The barber chose not to purchase the items, so Stafford and Coleman sold Greer’s laptop and iPhone at a nearby electronics repair store. The defendant’s also purchased food at a McDonald’s restaurant using Greer’s debit card.
Spencer and Stafford were convicted of FELONY MURDER AND BURGLARY IN THE FIRST DEGREE. The defendants were sentenced to LIFE IN PRISON. Pritchett, Clark, and Coleman will face a trial in Fulton County Superior Court, on the same charges, at a later date.
Judge Shukura Ingram Millender, of the Superior Court of Fulton County, presided over the case. Chief Senior Assistant District Attorney Seleta Griffin led the prosecution team. She was assisted by Assistant District Attorney Rives Hiles, Investigator Rasheed Hamilton, and Victim Witness Advocate Ilona Rolack of the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office. Former Detective Vincent Velazquez from the Atlanta Police Department was the Lead Investigator in the case.
