Guilty Verdict Marks 68th Pimp Conviction

September 9, 2013

Atlanta– Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard Jr. announces the conviction by jury trial of another Atlanta pimp in the DA’s on-going efforts against human trafficking and child exploitation. 34 year-old Dwayne Shaw was convicted Monday of Human Trafficking, Pimping, Pandering, Aggravated Sodomy, Aggravated Child Molestation, Statutory Rape, False Imprisonment, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor and Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer in connection with the sexual abuse and exploitation of a 15-year-old girl.

The defendant first met the teenager online. Shortly after meeting her in person in November 2012, Shaw lured the young girl into a life of prostitution. He began to schedule “dates” for her at local hotels and pocketed all of the money she earned.  The victim was forced to stay at the defendant’s Oak Street home in Southwest Atlanta where he raped and imprisoned her. She was discovered after four days following a series of text messages she sent to family and friends alerting them she was being held against her will. Police were able to track the messages to Defendant Shaw’s home where the victim was discovered barricaded in the attic.

Following his conviction this afternoon, Dwayne Shaw was sentenced to life in prison by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Kimberly Esmond Adams.

Shaw is the 68th pimp prosecuted by the District Attorney’s Office since 2000. The case was handled by the newly established Human Trafficking Unit, led by Senior Assistant District Attorney Camila Wright with assistance from ADA John Williams and DA Investigator Amanda Pritchett.  Special Agent Joe Fonseca of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Detective Jared Watkins of the Atlanta Police Department led the initial investigation.

Funded by a 2011 grant from the United States Justice Department, the Human Trafficking Unit- a subsidiary of the DA’s Crimes Against Women and Children Unit- focuses exclusively on child exploitation with a specific emphasis on human trafficking. The Unit secured its first victory in August 2012 with the conviction and life sentence of a well-known pimp named David Pepe who sexually abused and prostituted a 14-year-old runaway girl.
