TRIAL SET FOR DAYCARE OWNER ACCUSED OF FATALLY INJURING BABY
11-Month Old Suffered Broken Back, Internal Bleeding

Atlanta– Jury selection is underway in the case against an unlicensed daycare owner accused of killing a child in her care. 44- year-old Maria Owens is charged with Murder, Felony Murder (two counts), Aggravated Assault and Cruelty to Children in the First Degree in connection with the beating death of 11-month-old Jaylan Kelly.
Emergency crews were called to the home of 3051 Broadleaf Trail in Fairburn on June 1, 2011 on a report of an unresponsive child. The baby boy was transported to Piedmont Fayette Hospital and then airlifted to Eggleston Children’s Hospital where he later died. The Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death as blunt force trauma of the torso which also resulted in massive internal bleeding.
Opening statements are expected to begin tomorrow morning in courtroom 4A. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Henry Newkirk is presiding over the trial. The case is being prosecuted by the Major Felony Unit.
