Defendant raped victim in 2007
Atlanta–Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr., announces the RAPE conviction, by a Fulton County Superior Court Jury, of 54-year-old ANTONIO WHITE.
On October 13, 2013, the victim, in this case, was waiting for a train at the Five Points MARTA station in Atlanta. It had been six years since Antonio White, the defendant, had raped her, and she wondered if he would ever be brought to justice. While she waited for the train that day the victim just so happened to spot her attacker for the first time since he sexually assaulted her in 2007. She was overcome by the moment and began to yell out that he was the man who had raped her six years earlier. Hearing her cries for help, MARTA Police arrested White and turned him over to Atlanta Police.
On the night of August 12, 2007, the victim was walking to the Hamilton E. Holmes MARTA station in Atlanta when Antonio White, the defendant, drove up in his grey Chevrolet Lumina and asked if she wanted a ride. The victim knew White from the former Carver Homes neighborhood in Southeast Atlanta where they both formerly lived, so she said okay. Instead of driving her home, the defendant took the victim to an abandoned house on Bowen Avenue. The victim was trapped inside the car because the door handle and button to control the window were missing. As White opened his door, the victim opened her door and ran, but he chased her with a gun. The defendant grabbed the victim’s hair from behind and pulled her back inside the car at gunpoint. White then raped the victim inside his vehicle. During the incident, White said to the victim,
“Shut up that screaming (expletive) or I’ll kill you.”
For years, this victim assured family, friends, and neighbors that she had been raped, but she never officially reported the crime to police. Those closest to the victim left her to believe nothing would ever come of the case, and she did not know the defendant’s real name. However, after MARTA Police finally arrested White in October 2013, and Atlanta Police began its investigation, detectives quickly learned White had sexually assaulted several other women in the Carver Homes/Lakewood area between 1983 and 2008. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence of four previous sexual assaults committed by the defendant. White would typically approach the women on foot and assault the victims in wooded areas. The defendant has one prior rape conviction, a robbery conviction, and he previously pleaded guilty to sexual battery.
WHITE was convicted of RAPE, and he was sentenced to LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE.
Judge Shawn Ellen Lagrua, of the Superior Court of Fulton County, presided over the case. Assistant District Attorney Johnquel Neal prosecuted the case. She was assisted by Assistant District Attorney Bonnie Smith and Investigator James Spear of the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office. Detective B. Etterle of the Atlanta Police Department was the Lead Investigator in the case.
